Gun Blueing Touch-Up

The information below describes and shows the process of touching up gun blueing. The gun used for this demonstration is a Savage Model 24H-DL Ducks Limited 22 Magnum/20 Gauge Over/Under Combination gun with serial number 8UP. The photo below shows the Savage Combination gun:

This gun makes an excellent demonstration example because some blueing on the end of the barrels has been worn/scratched/rubbed off and rust has begun forming. The photo below shows the barrel ends:

Blueing Touch-Up Procedure

The author has found that the best procedure for obtaining the best blueing results follows:
1. Clean thoroughly using Cleaner-Degreaser.
2. Brush thoroughly with fine bristled brass brush.
3. Clean again with Cleaner-Degreaser and 0000 steel wool only on area to be touched up.
4. Apply Blue And Rust Remover as directed only on area to be touched up.
5. Clean again with Cleaner-Degreaser.
6. Scrub continuously with clean soft cloth saturated in blueing till color matches that of existing blueing. This should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Do not allow dry spots to form anywhere while scrubbing.
7. Rub continuously with 0000 steel wool saturated with blueing to produce even distribution of color. This should take approximately 5 minutes.
8. Wipe continuously with clean soft cloth saturated in blueing till color matches that of existing blueing. This should take approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Do not allow dry spots to form anywhere while rubbing.
9. Wipe with paper towel, rinse in water, and dry thoroughly.
10. Apply liberal coat of oil and allow to cure for at least 12 hours.
